Weight lifting: The Basics
1983
Chausow, Sharon
Fundamental aspects of weight lifting are discussed, including energy metabolism and requirements, physiological and metabolic aspects of muscle structure and contraction and the use of progressive overloads to repeatedly challenge muscles with increased weights. Information also is given on the 3 types of muscular contractions (isotonic, isokinetic, and isometric), equipment considerations, and the growing popularity of circuit weight training programs involving a number of exercise stations. It is recommended that blood preassure response to different types of weight training be checked and that steriod drugs (androgenic-anabolic steriods) be avoided due to potentially harmful side-effects.
