Fire blight of pear is now endemic in Egypt. Streptomycin has been used in pear orchards in several Egyptian provinces. And strains of Erwinia amylovora resistant to streptomycin have developed. Extracts from harmel, garlic, madder, thyme and garden sage inhibited the growth of E. amylovora in vitro. Those from garlic, madder and harmel were more effective inhibiting the growth of streptomycin to resistant isolates (Sm(r)) of E. amylovora in vitro as compared to streptomycin sensitive isolates (Sm(s)).
