Yogurt
1983
Yogurts (low in calories and as nutritious as a glass of milk) are compared for price; sensory defects; flavor strength; calorie, protein, fat, and sodium content (per 8-ounce serving). Yogurt is not a complete meal because some essential vitamins and minerals are missing. Yogurt isn't as low in calories as people believe (a glass of whole milk and an apple provide more nutrients and fiber with fewer calories). Prices vary according to manufacturer and some of the inexpensive brands had the greatest appeal. "Pure" and "natural" labeling can be misconstrued. Many yogurts contain more ingredients than homemade varieties (a recipe is included). Gelatin, food starch, potassium sorbate (or sodium benzoate), sorbic acid, carrageenan, tragacanth, guar gum, beet juice or extract, and carmine are common additives. (kbc)
