Diagnosis of N status in strawberry (Fragaria x Ananassas Duch)

The purpose of this work was to determine the critical nitrogen (N) and N dilution curve for strawberry. An experiment was carried out in a greenhouse under hydroponics conditions. Strawberry plants (cv. ‘Aromas’) were planted in pots in a gravel/coconut fiber substrate. Seven N levels (0, 0.01, 0.1, 0.3, 3, 9 and 30 mM in the irrigation water) were applied. Five samplings, every month from planting date, were done in order to monitor aerial dry mass and N content. Significant differences in dry matter accumulation between N treatments were observed. Dilution curves could be fitted to each treatment, and different patterns were observed: strong dilution at low N levels, almost no dilution at high N levels, and intermediate behaviour for the 3 mM level. The critical N curve was determined, and fitted with the dilution model. Parameters a, corresponding to maximum N concentration in the plant, and b, corresponding to the dilution factor, could be estimated. The a value obtained in this work is consistent to that of other crops in the C3 group. The b value obtained in strawberry indicates a much lower N dilution than in all crops mentioned in literature. This suggests that other factors that could influence the N dilution curve need to be studied. Although the critical N curve could be established for strawberry under greenhouse conditions, additional research is needed to validate it in field conditions and obtain more accurate parameter values.
