As shown in 17,649 pregnancies, prepregnancy weights of smoking mothers are systematically lower than comparable weights of non-smoking mothers appropriately corrected both for weight and per-capita income. In similar fashion, weight gain between pregnancies is considerably smaller for women who smoke than for non-smoking women of the same race. Tables present data relative to weight, income, race, and smoking variables.
