A comparison of the effect of mechanical and insect damage on alkaloid levels in Atropa acuminata

Alkaloid levels were determined in roots, leaves and stems of Atropa acuminata after varying degrees of mechanical damage and of larval feeding on the leaves. Very little change in alkaloid content was recorded after 0.4%, 2.1% and 5.3% of the leaf tissue had been removed. A dramatic increase was recorded when 9% of the leaf had been eaten and alkaloid levels rose to double those in controls. Alkaloid content in other parts of the plant remained unchanged. The alkaloid increases due to mechanical damage were essentially identical to those produced by Heliothis virescens feeding.
