Keystone taxa in the human microbiome, which are unique and are constantly changing, play a crucial role in commensalism and the etiology of disease in humans, which has opened a new door to diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities. In this review, we discuss the conceptual milestones of keystone taxa, factors, and scientific techniques connected to the keystone taxa identified in humans. We provide a synopsis of the recent developments in the function of keystone taxa in humans. We also propose biotechnological approaches using keystone taxa that may be implemented to advance medical sciences relating to disease diagnosis and treatment for humans.
