Influence of L-proline on Citrus sinensis (L.) ['New Hall' and 'Tarocco Scire'] fruit quality

Studies carried out in Japan and California on different vegetable species demonstrate that amino acids application (especially L-Proline) improves some yield characteristics. Results show an improvement in environmental stress tolerance (such as water or salinity stress), on nitrogen absorption, and a generic gaining in organoleptic characteristics and fruit weight. The Italian orange production is about 2.254.000 t with more than 50% of the production located in Sicily. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of exogenous L-Proline foliar applications for improving orange tree fruit quality. The experiment was carried out on a commercial orchard in Motta Santa Anastasia (CT) 37°28’ Lat N on 12 year-old trees of cultivar ‘Tarocco Scirè’ [Citrus sinensis (L.)/Citrus aurantium (L.)] spaced 4.5×4.5 m (494 plants ha-1) and on 12 year-old trees of cultivar ‘New Hall’ [Citrus sinensis (L.)/Citrus aurantium (L.)] spaced 4.0×2.5 m (1000 plants ha-1) in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. L-Proline was applied at three different concentrations (100, 200 and 400 ppm) every 30 days from blooming to harvest. Treatment with L-Proline was effective on ‘Tarocco Scirè’ and ‘New Hall’ yield, improving both fruit weight and diameter, and had a positive effect on total soluble solid content.
