Predicting basal metabolic rate, new standards and review of previous work
1985
Schofield, W.N.
A detailed examination of published studies on basal metabolic rate (BMR) discusses and reviews recent attempts to predict BMR from age, sex, and anthropometric measurements. The scientific and statistical integrity of a widely used table of standard metabolic rates for weight is especially criticized. The statistical screening of data from the past 50 years of published literature is described, and equations developed from these data are presented. The equations are used to predict BMR from weight or weight and height, normalized for sex and age differences. Information on the estimation of BMR prediction errors using new data for individuals and group mean values is presented, and a BMR table covering male and female weights ranging from 3-84 kg is included. Cross-validation techniques are discussed for comparing data from different sources. Differences in BMR data between developing and developed countries are compared and discussed.(wz)
