Advances, current challenges, and future trends in bioseparation: perspective analysis of the papers published in JCTB

Bioseparation is a crucial process for the obtention of biological products that are essential in daily life, such as medicine and food. At first, the researchers centered their efforts on the optimization of the upstream processes, conducting to high product titer. Afterwards, they turned their attention to improving the downstream processes. Since then, a revolution of technologies has been reported for the recovery, separation, and/or purification of bioproducts. Therefore, this perspective article aims to present the advances, current challenges, and future trends in bioseparation. In this context, a practical approach to summarize the published articles in the Journal of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology regarding this topic is presented; in addition, a classification of, (i) trusted old, (ii) novel, and (iii) evolved technologies is proposed. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).
