Hormonal signalling of the Trichoderma harzianum-induced resistance to Fusarium oxysporum and growth promotion effect in melon plants

Trichoderma ssp. have shown to induce systemic resistance to a variety of plant pathogens and to promote plant growth through fungal interactions with phytohormonal signalling. Changes in the concentration of SA, JA, IAA, Ze and ACC in shoots of melon plants grown in seedling nurseries, as a result of inoculation with T. harzianum as well as their implications on basal resistance against Fusarium wilt and growth promotion effect has been studied. Additionally, the changes in the concentration of SA and JA in melon plants, as consequence of the complex interaction between the plant, T. harzianum and F. oxysporum were investigated. T. harzianum mediated increases on Ze, IAA and ACC concentration as well as in the related- defence hormones SA and JA. F. oxysporum infection is mediated by a SA, and JA dependent response. In the two-way-interactions (T. harzianum-F. oxysporum), an attenuation on the SA dependent response mediated by the pathogen infection was observed. The present study shows the ability of T. harzianum to interfere with the hormonal balance involved in biotic stress, plant defence and plant development. The mechanisms involved in the control of Fusarium wilt by T. harzianum in melon plants, seem to be related not only to the induction of plant resistance, but also to the capacity of T. harzianum to attenuate the SA-dependent response mediated by the pathogen.
