Biochar – Potential tool to combat climate change and drought

The biochar is a solid residue obtained from thermolysis (pyrolysis) of various biomass feedstock including lignocellulosic waste. The issues associated with the production and application or usage of the biochar have been dynamically developed throughout the world in recent years and the application of biochar in soils has been widely discussed as a possible and simple way to sequestrate carbon and improve soil's chemical and physical properties for better plant growth. The present paper deals with an overview of the currently available knowledge on the above subject and is widely supported by authors’ own research results. The results of authors’ investigation on biochar application to Polish soils indicate that addition of biochar into soils in different proportions increase the soil carbon content, pH, and plant growth. It is discussed that the biochar production would be an important component of circular bioregions’ economy and a powerful tool for clean energy conversion and atmospheric carbon sink in order to counteract climate changes.
