The influence of temperature on leaf production and vegetative growth of Avena fatua

Leaf emergence, leaf area and plant d. wt of Avena fatua were examined under a range of constant day/night temperatures at a single light intensity under controlled environment conditions. A simple thermal time analysis was used as the basis for predicting plant growth and development. Multiple regression was used to relate leaf number to mean temperature and to the number of days from sowing to 50% plant emergence. From the thermal regression equations a threshold temperature when growth ceases, the threshold time at which seedlings became established and emergence rate and a constant were also estimated. The reciprocals of the duration of leaf expansion and leaf number were linearly related; slopes and intercepts varied with temperature. Relationships were established between logarithms of leaf area, average temperature and day number. Final leaf area increased with average temperature and leaf number. Specific leaf area was inversely related to accumulated temperature. The logarithm of d. wt components, average temperature and number of days from sowing were related; threshold temperature, relative growth rate and a constant were estimated. Parameter values were compared and contrasted for the measures of growth and development. Shoot/root ratios were not clearly related to temperature. The consequences of the models are suggested particularly with respect to the formulation of a growth model for A. fatua.
