Fungicides can impact physiological processes in plants: An overview

After host resistance, fungicides play an important role in managing plant diseases caused by diverse fungal species. Several groups of fungicide compounds from diverse chemical classes are employed in disease management programmes. Apart from controlling plant diseases, some fungicides have been found to affect various physiological processes of plants leading to marked impact on plant growth and productivity. Many of the fungicides such as benzimidazoles, triazoles, strobilurins, carboxamides, acylalanines, alkyl phosphonates, copper-based, sulphur compounds, etc. are reported to exhibit significant impact on various physiological and developmental processes in plants notably, photosynthesis, senescence, pollination, flower and fruit development, stress tolerance and host defense response. In several cases, such changes are effected by fungicides independent of disease attack. This review gives an overview of the effects of commonly used fungicides of diverse chemistry on physiological processes in plants and explores the possibility of future development of new fungicides with lesser adverse and more beneficial effects on plant growth and development.
