The effects of maternal protein deprivation on renal development and function in neonatal rats

Pregnant rats were fed either a control diet of 24% protein or a low (8-10%) protein diet during gestation and lactation to study the effects of maternal protein deprivation on kidney functioning in the developing offspring. The effects of prenatal protein deprivation were not significant; however protein deprivation during lactation had a more profound effect on kidney and body weight. Renal transport functions were differentially affected. In pups nursed by protein deficient dams, renal transport capacity for organic bases and acids was depressed and maturation of the organic acid transport system was delayed. Alpha-aminoisobutyric acid accumulation by renal cortical slices was enhanced only in 10-day-old rats stressed pre- and post-natal maternal protein deprivation. Renal gluconeogenic and ammoniagenic capacity was not impaired. No differences in protein or water content of renal cortical slices were observed.
