Food habits during pregnancy and lactation in Iraq

The food habits of pregnant and lactating women were surveyed in a study of 1,020 Iraqui women. Housewives and mothers from both the northern and southern sectors were included. Questionnaires were used to collect data related to dietary habits, pregnancy, puerperum, and lactation. Tables report the results; generally, mothers in the northern sectors consumed more milk, meat, eggs, and chicken than did southern sector women who tended to consume more fish. Dates and sweets are believed to stimulate milk production and are recommended for lactation. Generally, food habits varied according to customs and beliefs within the regions included. (kbc)
