Growth performance by rabbits after isoenergetic substitution of dietary fat for carbohydrates

The question was addressed whether isoenergetic replacement of corn starch plus dextrose (1:1, w/w) by corn oil in the diet of rabbits affects growth performance. Rabbits were fed semipurified diets containing 5.3 to 42.1% of metabolisable energy from fat in the form of corn oil. Restricted, isoenergetic amounts of feed were given daily for a period of 57 days. Body weight gain tended to increase and the amount of dietary energy required per unit gain tended to decrease with increasing fat levels up to 21.1% of energy in the diet. An increase in dietary fat tended to enhance the apparent digestibility of fat and nitrogen. Group means for slaughter yield and carcass quality showed an increase after feeding the high-fat diets. It is suggested tentatively that young growing rabbits use dietary corn oil more efficiently than isoenergetic amounts of corn starch plus dextrose.
