Calcium supplementation and postmenopausal bone loss

Nilas, L. | Christiansen, C. | Rodbro, P.
A questionnaire was used to assess bone mineral content as a function of time over a 2-year period of 103 early postmenopausal women with different Ca intake to determine if Ca intake influences Ca balance. The subjects were given a daily 500 mg Ca supplement for 2 years above their normal intake (550-1150 mg/day) with their bone mineral content measured every 3 months. All women showed a similar decline in bone mineral content over the 2-year period, suggesting that a total Ca intake of 1000-2000 mg/day is inadequate for bone loss prevention in early menopause.
