Influence of estrogen content of oral contraceptives and consumption of sucrose on insulin, glucose, lactate, and uric acid

A 6-week study of 10 female users of oral contraceptives (OCs) and 6 female non-user controls fed an experimental diet containing sucrose or wheat starch as 39% of the dietary calories examined the interaction of different estrogen levels present in the OC used with the consumption of sucrose or starch as the carbohydrate source. No significant differences in serum insulin, glucose, uric acid, or lactate was noted betwen OC users taking OCs containing 50 vs. 80-100 micrograms mestranol. Serum insulin of OC users on the sucrose diet, however, was significantly higher 1 hour after eating than on the starch diet and than the non-OC controls. In addition, fasting uric acid was significantly higher in OC users (with a significant decrease by 3 hours), while insulin and fasting uric acid was higher in all groups after the sucrose than after the wheat starch diet.(wz)
