Present study has been undertaken with an aim to assess the effect of sulphur dioxide exposure on the glycogen metabolic pathway of albino rat, Rattus norvegicus. Animal was exposed to two different doses of SO₂ (60 and 120 ppm) for two different intervals. The exposure caused significant reduction in the level of glycogen content and significant changes were observed in the activity of glycogen metabolic enzymes in liver of albino rats. Activity of glycogen synthase shows a marked reduction, whereas a significant and prominent enhancement was recorded in the activity of glycogen phosphorylase and glucose-6-phosphatase. From the present findings it can be concluded that SO₂ altered the glycogen metabolism in rats.
