Food qualities affect total haemolymph protein content in both sexes of the millipede Orthomorpha gracilis. Animals fed on preferred leaf litter of Ficus sycamore have higher concentration of haemolymph protein than those fed on less preferred leaf litter of Hedera helix. Electrophoretic fractionation of proteins was also investigated; two fractions only have been demonstrated. Fraction I is higher when preferred leaf litter of Ficus sycamore is used as food, and it is suggested that this type of litter is rich in the parent amino acids necessary for the synthesis of this fraction.
