Horizontal and vertical distribution of soil phosphorus concentration (Cp), root density and tuber dry matter was studied under greenhouse conditions during the growth cycle of potato, Montserrat variety, in an alkaline soil with silty clay-sandy texture with surface (SD) and subsurface drip (SSD) fertigation. With SD, the distribution of Cp in the soil had a pattern of hemispheric movement. During the growth cycle, the highest Cp and root density were located near the emitter (10 cm) that increased with time. With SSD, the pattern of Cp movement was spherical or radial around the emitter in the layer from 20 to 30 cm depth, and from 10 to 20 cm for root density. Cp and root density diminished as they moved away from the emitter in both drip systems. The same as the root density and the Cp, dry matter (DM) of the tuber was higher near the emitter in both drip systems. At 72 days after emergence, with SD, the highest content of DM of the tuber was located at 10 cm of vertical and lateral distance from the emitter with 74%, of the total DM of the tuber, while, with SSD, the highest content of DM of the tuber was located at 10 cm of vertical and lateral distance from the emitter, and from 20 to 10 cm of vertical and lateral distance with 26 and 47%, respectively. This means that the distribution of root density and of tubers varies according to the concentration of P, and SD and SSD irrigation systems.
