A new variety of Ocimum americanum L. rich in citral, has been developed by natural selection and raised for two successive growing seasons to examine the seasonal variations in herb yield and oil content, chemical variation and citral content. The new strain was selected because it was a short duration crop (100 days) for the production of a citral-rich oil. Analysis of the oil using GC, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and MS revealed that the oil contained a total citral content of 76% (neral 23.0%, geraniol 51.5%).
