Bovine papilloma virus bracken fern interaction in buffaloes and laboratory model hamsters: Molecular and clinico-pathological studies

The present investigation was conducted to establish the spontaneous prevalence of papillomatosis/EBH in buffaloes in UP, Uttarakhand and Tamilnadu and to study the molecular and clinicopathological changes in BPV-Bracken fern interaction in buffaloes and laboratory model hamsters. On field survey, ten non-bracken ferns Asplenium dalhousiae, Adiantum venustum, Woodwardia unigemmata, Athyrium mackinoniorum, Onychium lucidum and Cheilanthes dalhousiae in Nainital, Uttarakhand and Adiantum poiretti, Dryopteris concolor, Pteris confuse and Pseudocyclosorus octhodes in Nilgiris, Tamilnadu were identified for the first time to contain moderate to high level of ptaquiloside. Of the 41 samples analyzed the mean value of ptaquiloside content in different ferns samples was more than two times higher in Nilgiris as compared to Nainital. Pteridium revolutum contained varying amount of ptaquiloside (mean 1188.97 μg/g) and its level was found many folds higher in Nilgiris than Nainital samples. The cases of cutaneous warts were prevalent in buffaloes in organized dairies and in rural areas in Bareilly, UP and Udham Singh Nagar, Uttarakhand.
