Since being approved as Generally Regarded As Safe in 1985, canola oil (low erucic acid rapeseed oil) has stimulated interest in the agricultural and food processing sectors of the United States. Canola consumption in edible applications has gone from zero to almost 1 billion lb in seven years. It is expected that canola consumption will surpass that of both corn and cottonseed oil to become second only to soybean oil.
