Woman's guide to Social Security
1984
Almost all Americans are protected by Social Security , either as workers or dependents of workers. But there are certain things about Social Security that are particularly relevant to women. As long as a woman works she is earning credits toward a monthly income for her retirement. A woman should know that these credits remain on the work record and count toward the amount of work needed to receive Social Security payments. The amount of work needed will vary depending on when the woman reaches the age of 62. Dependents as well as women workers are covered if the worker dies or becomes disabled. A married woman can receive benefits either on her own or her husband's work record. A widow can get benefits at any age if she is caring for a child who is under age 16 or disabled. Child survivors are eligible until age 19 if they are attending elementary or secondary school full time. Divorced women can receive benefits under certain conditions for her ex-husband's work record. Remarriage does not necessarily mean loss of Social Security rights, pensions from public employment may result in reduced benefits as a wife or widow. (emc)
