Aluminum and dialysis dementia
1979
Dialysis dementia has been reported in some patients on chronic hemodialysis. The encephalopathy pattern usually begins with speech disturbances, followed by altered behavior, dementia, myoclonus, and convulsions. The cause may be a high aluminum content of the brain, resulting either from consumption of aluminum-containing antacids or high aluminum content of the water supply used for the dialysate. Preventive measures are the conservative use of aluminum-containing antacids and the careful analysis of the water used in the dialysate. A low-phosphorus diet may also be recommended.
