Soils of northern Tamaulipas, Mexico, are characterized by high clay content and low organic matter, N and P content which reduce crop production. During the last years, biofertilizers have been used to improve nutrient and water uptake; however, results have been inconsistent. The present work was carried out to evaluate sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) response to arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus and foliar application of brassinosteroids under field conditions. In addition to the treatments, 45 kg ha(-1) P were applied to the soil. Results showed different P uptake of sorghum plants to treatments of biofertilizers. Glomus intraradices, alone or combined with CINVESTAV-4 (a mycorrhizal complex), registered the highest concentrations of foliar P. Addition of P to the soil had no influence on the evaluated parameters nor on mycorrhizal colonization. However, different response in grain yield was observed between biofertilizers and P level. G. fasciculatum and CINVESTAV-4 had the highest grain yields without P and G. intraradices was not affected by the application on soil of P.
