Modelling economically optimum rates of N, P, K fertilizers and population density in maize by binomial approximation is tested in an effort to reduce the cost of developing recommendations for crop management. An additive model for five uncontrolled diagnostic factors that minimizes discrepancy between computed and observed optimum rates was selected for each controlled factor. The selection process involved a large number of runs from arbitrarily selected factorial space and factor increment. Organic matter, available P, exchangeable Ca, Mg, and K, pH, drought index, and disease index were used as potential diagnostic factors. Nine field experiments conducted in years 1993 to 1995 provided both the observed optimum rates and values of the uncontrolled factors.
