The American Society for Clinical Nutrition (ASCN) panel sought to produce a series of documents that would present the basic facts about several issues that relate to the role of nutrition in the nation's health. The goals included avoiding an advocacy position and constituting a consensus that would help public officials formulate national nutritional policy. The scientists on the panel had wide experience in clinical medicine, human metabolism and nutrition, epidemiology, and animal experimentation. They were asked to examine all available scientific evidence on six dietary issues--cholesterol, fat, carbohydrate, calories, alcohol, and sodium. These are thought to cause the prevalence of arteriosclerosis, diabetes, hypertension, liver disease, dental caries, and obesity. Finally, the panel summarized its views covering three areas: the kinds of available evidence, the quality and strength of that evidence, and the risks and benefits of changing the intake of the given dietary factor.
