Biosynthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Using Bark Extracts of Eucalyptus tereticornis Sm. and Study of Their Antimicrobial Properties

Silver nanoparticles were synthesized from silver nitrate using bark extracts of Eucalyptus tereticornis Sm. The extract was mixed with silver nitrate solution in ratio of the 1:2 and kept at room temperature for 7 h. The conversion of silver ion to silver nanoparticle was noticed with the change of color aliquot from faint brown to deep red. The bioactive compounds present in extract were identified as poly phenolic compounds, primary and secondary metabolites. Synthesis of silver nanoparticle was confirmed by spectrophotometer. The particles had the adsorption maxima [Formula: see text]ₘₐₓ at 450 nm. Silver nitrate of concentration of 10 mM at alkaline condition (pH 8.5) favored the conversion process. The particles were spherical in shape and with an average diameter of 78 nm. FTIR chromatogram of particles showed the peaks of 3320.0, 2150.6 and 1636.0 wavelength cm⁻¹ can be attributed to the attachment of biomolecules on the surface of the particles. This prevents the aggregation of nanoparticles among themselves and leads to better stabilization. The in vitro antimicrobial study of the silver nanoparticles on Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa found that the particles had the growth inhibition capacity against all these microorganisms. The investigation concludes that the phytocompounds present in the bark of Eucalyptus can be used as a catalyzer for biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles. The synthesized nanomaterials were stabilized due to adhesion of bio-molecules on their surface. The biosynthesized silver nanoforms had growth inhibitory properties against human pathogenic bacteria.
