In a field test conducted in north central Florida, the effects of various winter cover crops on the soil surface invertebrate community were investigated. The cover crops evaluated were: wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), rye (Secale cereale L.), oat (Avena sativa L.), lupine (Lupinus angustifolius L.), hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth.), and crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum L.). Cover crops affected a variety of arthropod groups, including beneficial species as well as some potential pests, specifically aphids (Aphididae), leafhoppers (Cicadellidae), plant bugs (Miridae), and thrips (Thysanoptera). Many of the effects observed on insect populations were seasonal and of short duration.
