The New media: Potential uses and impact of the new technologies for children's learning

Much research has been done to determine the effect of television on children's learning. New (media) technologies present implications for a new and different (more specialized) impact. New technologies include cable television, satellite distribution, fiber optics, video-cassette recorders, videodisc players, video games, and personal home computers. Four broad areas of research which have involved different conceptual focuses are television viewing patterns; children's television attention; cognitive skills and television content; and cognitive skills and television format characteristics. Evolution of the new technologies has included tremendous growth in cable television availability and uses. Because the new technologies are expensive, they have the potential to further stratify socioeconomic classes. Many new technologies are interactive. Personal computers allow children to become involved in activities that can improve and educate them or cause antisocial behavior. Research must continue in order to define and resolve the potential impact and problems as they affect children's learning opportunities. (kbc)
