Application of the Law of Composites to Twisted Continuous-Filament Glass/Nylon Blended Yarns

The results are reported of a comprehensive experimental study carried out to determine the tensile behavior of a blended yam as a function of twist and blend ratio. The findings may serve as criteria for the design of a blended yarn with pre-determined characteristics. Blends of continuous-filament glass/nylon strands were prepared, twisted, and subjected to various tests and observa tions. The experimental results were then analyzed and compared with the existing theories. Excellent agreement was found between the law of composites, normally used for an untwisted matrix, and blended yarn tensile data at twist angles of up to 20°. Moreover, the all-glass yarn tensile model, presented in a previous paper, was found adequate to describe the tensile-twist behavior of the glass/nylon blended yarns. The agreement between this model and the experi mental data improve as the glass content decreases. This change is believed to be due to an apparent improvement in the abrasion resistance of the blended structure.
