Effect of herbicides applied at different times of the day

Spraying with a low dose of a mixture of ioxynil, dichlorprop and MCPA early in the morning or in the middle of the day caused a greater reduction in biomass of rape used as a test plant than spraying in the evening. There was a similar tendency for the biomass of all weeds, and for the number of plants of rape as well as weeds. Chenopodium album, Matricaria matricarioides and Lapsana communis tended to be less susceptible at evening sprayings, while little differences were found for Galium aparine, Stellaria media and Viola arvensis. The soil was relatively dry during the experimental period. Nevertheless, no correlation between tensiometer readings during the day and the effect of the herbicides was found. There was, however, a significant negative correlation between the biomass left after spraying and a product of relative humidity 8 h before spraying and temperature 8 h after spraying. For rape, there was also a significant correlation showing a reduction in herbicide effect when the air humidity the first 8 h after spraying increased. It is concluded that spraying in the early morning or at daytime should be preferred under dry soil conditions with this type of herbicide.
