Biosorption is a better method compared to bioaccumulation for the removal of metal contaminants from aqueous solution. Out of different microbial species, fungi have more ability to remove and degrade heavy metal ions due to the presence of different negatively charged species and metal binder polysaccharide groups on its surface. Out of all the fungal species, Penicillium sp. is the mostly prominent one because of its large production and filamentous nature. But, its use in the removal of heavy metal ions from real industrial waste water is limited. Therefore, in the present article heavy metal ions from copper and zinc industrial waste water have been tried to be removed using Penicillium sp. and sodium alginate-immobilized Penicillium sp. Penicillium sp. is more specific towards copper compared to nickel. It has been observed that immobilized Penicillium sp. has more metal removal capacity compared to Penicillium sp. Zinc removal capacity of immobilized Penicillium sp. is much more compared to Penicillium sp. Since highly concentrated metal ions are difficult to be removed in a single stage of operation, total number of stages required for the complete removal of heavy metal contents of two industrial effluents have also been evaluated. The same has been confirmed by performing simulated runs.
