A Hierarchical Linear Relationship of Student and Classroom Variables with Employment Aspirations of Specialized Vocational High School Students

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between emplyment aspirations of specialized vocational high school students, student-level and classroom-level variables. To this end, a class-specific survey was conducted targeting third-year students at specialized high schools, and 765 copies of data from a total of 38 classes were secured. Based on the collected data, a hierarchical linear model analysis was conducted between employment aspirations and student and classroom-level variables. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, among the total variance of emplyment aspirations of specialized vocational high school students, the variance explained by the difference between classroom was 14.3%. Second, it was found that interest in specialized subject, average grades, and career support from family had a significant effect on the level of emplyment aspirations. Third, it was found that the average level of emplyment aspirations by classroom varied depending on whether or not the head teacher was the head teacher, the industry major of the classroom, and the degree of employment support. According to the conclusion of this study, it is necessary to continuously accumulate empirical studies on the measurement of employment quality and employment aspirations of vocational high school students, and systematic career guidance considering employment aspirations should be provided. In addition, more research on the influence relationship between students in specialized high schools and homeroom teachers needs to be conducted, and additional analysis on the difference between school-level variables and classroom-level variables is needed.
