Aves marinas observadas entre Punta Arenas (Chile) y las Islas Shetland del Sur (Antartida) en los veranos de 90/91 y 91/92 | Seabirds observed between Punta Arenas (Chile) and the south Shetlands (Antarctica) in summers 1991 and 1992

Durante la Tercera y Cuarta Expediciones Ecuatorianas a la Antártida, se ha observado sistemáticamente las aves marinas durante más de 103 horas. Se presenta los resultados de tres diferentes zonas recorridas: Desde Punta Arenas (Chile) hasta el Cabo de Hornos, el Paso Drake y las visitadas Islas Shetland del sur. Además de especies cuya presencia en el área se conoce, se notó con frecuencia, tanto en 1991 como en 1992, una o dos especies de petreles oscuros, presumiblemente el Petrel de Parkinson (Pterodroma parkinsoni) y el Petrel de Nueva Zelandia (P. westlandica), que es más raro. En 1991 se encontró, al norte de la Isla Rey Jorge, una concentración del pinguino babiquejo (Pygoscelis antarctica), que posiblemente indicó el inicio de migración hacia el noroeste durante este período del año.

During the Third and Fourt Ecuadorian Expedition to Antarctica, seabirds were systematically observed during over 103 hours. Results are discussed for three different zone: Punta Arenas (Chile) to Cape Horn, the Drake Passage, and the visited south Shetland Islands. Amongst many species known to occur in the region, the regular sightings in both years of one or two species of all dark petrels, presumably Parkinson's Petrel (Pterodroma parkinsoni) and the much rarer Westland Black Petrel (P. westlandica) drew the attention. In 1991, a concentration of Chinstrap penguin (Pygoscelis antarctica9 just north from King George Island at the end of february, possibly indicated the start of seasonal movements to the nortwest.
