The influence of climate change on the demand of thermal energy in Northern Europe and Estonia

Due to climate warming, less energy will be used for indoor heating in the future. At the same time, the need for cooling residential premises is increasing. In this work, I analyse how significant the change in heating and cooling needs is in northern Europe and Estonia. I studied the changes in heating and cooling with the help of degree days in 1950 - 2100. The data for the past period (1950-2020) come from the ERA5 atmospheric reanalysis. Data for the future period (2021-2100) come from EURO-CORDEX climate models. I analyse two different emission scenarios of man-made greenhouse gases: a more optimistic and a more pessimistic one. Today, the need for heating has already clearly decreased compared to 1950, but more significant changes are still ahead in the case of the need for cooling. According to the most optimistic emission scenario, the heating demand in northern Europe will decrease by 20% by the end of the century and by 30%, according to the most pessimistic scenario, compared to 2020. At the same time, the cooling demand will increase one and a half times based on the optimistic scenario and even five times in the pessimistic scenario. In earlier research, qualitatively similar changes in degree days have been found for Europe more generally. My results are valuable for the energy and construction sectors. In the future, in addition to the average change in the heat energy demand, variability and extremes should be analysed and the change in population and advancements in building quality included in research.

Tulenevalt kliima soojenemisest hakkab tulevikus vähem energiat kuluma siseruumide kütmisele. Samas aga suureneb vajadus eluruumide jahutamise järele. Antud töös analüüsin, kui suur on kütmise ja jahutamise vajaduse muutus Põhja-Euroopa ja Eesti piirkonnas. Kütmis- ja jahutusvajaduse muutust uurin kraadpäevade abil aastatel 1950 kuni 2100. Mineviku perioodi andmed (1950-2020) pärinevad atmosfääri järelanalüüsist ERA5. Tuleviku perioodi andmed (2021-2100) pärinevad EURO-CORDEX kliima mudelitest. Tuleviku andmetes analüüsin kahte erinevat inimtekkeliste kasvuhoonegaaside emissiooni-stsenaariumit: optimistlikumat ja pessimistlikumat. Tänaseks on küttevajadus juba selgelt vähenenud, võrreldes 1950 aastaga, aga jahutusvajaduse puhul seisavad suuremad muutused alles ees. Optimistlikuma emissioonistsenaariumi järgi väheneb sajandi lõpuks Läänemere piirkonnas küttevajadus 20% ning pessimistlikuma stsenaariumi järgi 30%, võrreldes aastaga 2020. Samas tõuseb jahutusvajadus poolteist korda optimistliku stsenaariumi põhjal ja lausa 5 korda pessimistliku puhul. Varasemalt on Euroopa kohta üldisemalt leitud kvalitatiivselt sarnased muutused kraadpäevades. Töö tulemused on olulise rakendusliku väärtusega energeetika- ja ehitussektori jaoks. Tulevikus tuleks lisaks keskmisele soojusenergia muutusele analüüsida ka varieeruvust ja ekstreemumeid ning arvesse võtta rahvaarvu ja ehituskvaliteedi muutuseid.
