Filtración sostenible para la provisión de agua potable en comunidades rurales en desarrollo utilizando biochar generado localmente

La disponibilidad de un sistema de potabilización en comunidades rurales en desarrollo es limitada, o poseen una planta de tratamiento de agua ineficiente, que no garantiza la calidad e inocuidad del recurso para el consumo humano; por lo que es necesario implementar un sistema accesible y de alta eficiencia, que cuente con soluciones sostenibles. La implementación de biochar como medio filtrante es una opción poco investigada en este tipo de sistemas, pero debido a su amplio uso en el tratamiento de aguas residuales y en la remoción de contaminantes químicos, y a la facilidad de su producción, esta investigación tuvo como objetivo evaluar la eficiencia del biochar como material filtrante para tratamiento de agua potable para comunidades en desarrollo. El estudio comprende la producción de biochar utilizando como biomasa residual: eucalipto (E), bambú (B) y raquis de plátano (R), a través de la aplicación de dos procesos de pirólisis lenta denominados “a” y “b”, que difieren entre sí por su temperatura y tiempo de pirólisis; con valores promedio de alrededor de 300 °C y 60 minutos, 400 °C y 107 minutos, respectivamente. Se evaluó la eficiencia de estos materiales en el proceso de filtración con diferentes tipos de agua (cruda, floculada y sedimentada) a una tasa de 120 m3 /m2 /d, encontrando que el biochar de bambú manufacturado bajo el proceso “b” (Bb) fue el de mejor desempeño. Luego de ello, para este mismo material (Bb), bajo las mismas condiciones de operación, se probaron tres granulometrías distintas, determinando que el tamaño efectivo de mejor rendimiento en el proceso de filtración fue el más fino (0.65 mm). Posteriormente, se comparó este bio carbón con materiales filtrantes convencionales como grava, arena y antracita, también con diferentes tipos de agua (cruda, floculada y sedimentada) y a diferentes tasas de filtración (120 y 240 m3 /m2 /d) para la remoción de parámetros físicos (turbidez y color), encontrando que el material filtrante de mejor rendimiento fue precisamente el biochar, con eficiencias promedio de remoción de turbidez y color, respectivamente, de 64.37 y 45.08 %, para agua cruda; 93.9 y 90.75 %, para agua floculada; y, 80.79 y 69.03 %, para agua sedimentada. De igual forma, para estos lechos filtrantes (arena, biochar, antracita y grava), se probó la remoción de parámetros químicos y biológicos a una tasa de 180 m3 /m2 /d, obteniendo para el biochar las siguientes eficiencias: cobre del 75.9 %, aluminio del 90.72 %, hierro del 95.7 %, nitratos del 10.9 %, coliformes totales del 94.3 % y coliformes fecales del 88.9 %; determinando que para la remoción de metales (cobre, aluminio y hierro) y de coliformes totales, las eficiencias alcanzadas por el biochar fueron las más altas entre los materiales filtrantes comparados. Adicionalmente, se pudo demostrar que el volumen de agua de lavado requerido para el biochar es inferior respecto los demás lechos. Finalmente, se probó las eficiencias de remoción de turbidez y color para lechos mixtos (combinando varios materiales), encontrando que para el tratamiento de agua floculada y sedimentada el biochar contribuye a mejorar el rendimiento de la arena y antracita en el proceso de filtración, y que además ayuda a reducir el volumen de agua requerido por estos lechos durante el proceso de lavado. Los resultados obtenidos señalan al biochar producido localmente como una opción viable para la provisión de agua potable en comunidades rurales en desarrollo y como una alternativa a tener en consideración para la consecución del sexto objetivo de la Agenda para el Desarrollo Sostenible para el año 2030: acceso universal para agua, saneamiento e higiene

The availability of a drinking water treatment system in developing rural communities is limited or the existing water treatment plant is inefficient, which does not guarantee the quality and safety of the resource for human consumption. Therefore, it is necessary to implement an accessible and highly efficient system that has sustainable solutions. The implementation of biochar as a filter bed in this type of systems is little researched, but due to its large use in sewage treatment and chemical pollutants removal and its ease of production, this research aimed to evaluate the efficiency of biochar as a filter media for drinking water treatment for developing communities. The study includes the production of biochar using as residual biomass: eucalyptus (E), bamboo (B) and banana stem (R), through two slow pyrolysis process denominated “a” and “b”, which differ from each other by their temperature and pyrolysis time, with average values around 300 °C and 60 minutes and 400 °C and 107 minutes, respectively. The efficiency of these materials in the filtration process with several types of water (raw, flocculated, and settled) at a rate of 120 m3 /m2 /d, was evaluated, finding that biochar derived from bamboo and manufactured under process “b” (Bb) was the best material filter. Then, under the same operating conditions, Bb was assessed in three different granulometry, determining that the finest effective size (0.65 mm) was the best in the filtration process. Subsequently, this biochar was compared with conventional filter materials such as gravel, sand and anthracite, with several types of water (raw, flocculated and settled) and at different filtration rates (120 and 240 m3 /m2 /d), for the removal of physical parameters (turbidity and color). Thus, it was found that the best filtration media was precisely biochar, with average turbidity and color removal efficiencies, respectively, of 64.37 and 45.08 % for raw water, 93.9 and 90.75 % for flocculated water, and 80.79 and 69.03 %, for settled water. Similarly, the removal of chemical and biological parameters was assessed at a rate of 180 m3 /m2 /d, obtaining the following efficiencies for biochar: copper 75.9 %, aluminum 90.72 %, iron 95.7 %, nitrates 10.9 %, total coliforms 94.3 % and fecal coliforms 88.9 %. Consequently, it was determined that the efficiencies achieved by biochar to remove these metals and total coliforms were the highest among the compared filter beds. Additionally, it was possible to demonstrate that the volume of washing water required by the biochar is lower than that of the other beds. Finally, the efficiencies of turbidity and color removal for mixed beds were assessed (combining various materials), finding that for the treatment of flocculated and settled water, biochar contributes to improving the performance of sand and anthracite in the filtration process. Also, it helps to reduce the volume of water required by these beds during the washing process. The results point to locally produced biochar as a viable option for the provision of drinking water in developing rural communities and an alternative to take into consideration for the achievement of the sixth Sustainable Development Goal by 2030: universal access to water, sanitation, and hygiene
