ASPECTOS BIOLÓGICO-PESQUEROS DE LA MEDUSA BOLA DE CAÑÓN, Stomolophus sp. 1, EN EL ALTO GOLFO DE CALIFORNIA

"La pesquería de medusa bola de cañón (Stomolophus spp.) es una actividad económica muy importante para los pescadores ribereños y las comunidades de la costa de Sonora. Un estudio reciente determinó que en el litoral Sonorense existen dos especies crípticas: Stomolophus sp. 1 del Alto Golfo de California, y Stomolophus sp. 2 de Bahía de Kino y zona aledaña a Bahía de Las Guásimas. Para ambas existe información escasa sobre aspectos ecológicos, biológicos y pesqueros, y la mayoría son para Stomolophus sp. 2. Además, las recomendaciones de manejo pesquero incluidas en la Carta Nacional de Pesca corresponden a esta última especie. Con la finalidad de incrementar el conocimiento de estas medusas, en el presente estudio se analizó el crecimiento individual, se describieron los caracteres de las gónadas para comprender la biología reproductiva y se estimó talla de primera madurez (L50) de Stomolophus sp. 1 mediante recolecta de organismos en el Alto Golfo de California. Para ello, se realizaron muestreos biológicos mensuales en 2018 y 2019, de los cuales se obtuvieron muestras de gónada (n2018 = 116; n2019=109). Se registraron también el diámetro de campana (DC) y el peso de cada organismo para analizar la relación peso-longitud y hacer inferencias sobre la eficacia de la especie en la asimilación y conversión de alimento en biomasa corporal. En ninguno de los dos años se observó una desviación significativa de la proporción generalmente esperada (1:1) de hembras/machos. En ambos años se observaron cinco estadios gonádicos en las hembras, con un desarrollo continuo de gametos y presencia de organismos maduros a tallas relativamente pequeñas comparadas con su congénere S. sp.2. La L50 fue de 78.26 y 85.24 mm de DC en 2018, 2019, respectivamente, y de 85.5 mm DC considerando ambos años en conjunto. La relación peso-longitud general fue de tipo alométrica negativa (2018) e isométrica (2019); isométrica en el caso de las hembras y alométrica negativa para los machos en ambos años. Con base en un análisis multinominal se infirió la presencia de múltiples modas en ovocitos en las gónadas de hembras, por lo que se considera a esta especie de medusa como desovadora parcial. Los valores de los parámetros de crecimiento individual del modelo de von Bertalanffy para ambos sexos combinados fueron: L∞ = 175 mm DC, k = 3.276 año-1, y t0 = 0.017 años para 2018; y L∞ =208 mm DC, k = 3.42 año-1 y t0 = 0.001 años en 2019..."

"The cannonball jellyfish (Stomolophus spp.) fishery is an important economic activity for artisanal fishers and communities along the Sonoran coast. A recent study determined that there are two cryptic species on the Sonoran coast: Stomolophus sp. 1 in the Upper Gulf of California, and Stomolophus sp. 2 of Bahía de Kino and the area surrounding Bahía de Las Guásimas. For both, there is scant information on ecologic, biological, and fishing aspects, and most are for Stomolophus sp. 2. Furthermore, the fishing management recommendations included in the National Fishing Chart correspond to the latter species. In order to increase the knowledge of these jellyfish, in the present study individual growth was analyzed, the characters of the gonads were described to understand the reproductive biology, and first maturity size (L50) of Stomolophus sp. 1 was determined collecting organisms in the Upper Gulf of California. For this, monthly biological samplings were carried out in 2018 and 2019, from which gonad samples were obtained (n2018 = 116; n2019 = 109). The bell diameter (BD) and the total weight of each organism were also recorded to analyze the weight-length relationship and make inferences about the efficiency of the species in the assimilation and conversion of food into biomass. In neither of the two years there was a significant deviation from the generally expected (1: 1) female / male ratio. Five gonadic stages were observed in the females of this species, with a continuous development of gametes and the presence of mature organisms at relatively small sizes compared to its congener S. sp.2 in both years. The L50 was 78.26- and 85.24 mm BD in 2018, 2019, respectively, and 85.5mm BD considering both years together. Relative growth was negative allometric (2018) and isometric (2019). Furthermore, relative growth was isometric in the case of females and negative allometric for males in both years. Based on a multinominal analysis, the presence of multiple modes in oocytes in the gonads of females was inferred, which is why this species of jellyfish is considered a partial spawner. The parameters values of the von Bertalanffy growth model were: L∞ = 175 mm BD, k = 3.276 year-1, and t0 = 0.017 years for 2018; and L∞ = 208 mm BD, k = 3.42 year-1 and t0 = 0.001 years in 2019. The information derived from this study allows updating the National Fisheries Chart and provides basic tools for the proper use and management of the resource."
