Evaluación de pigmentos carotenoides como aditivos alimentarios para la prevención de infecciones producidas por el virus del síndrome de la mancha blanca (WSSV) y la bacteria Vibrio harveyi en el camarón blanco Litopenaeus vannamei

Las enfermedades virales y bacterianas han afectado en gran escala los cultivos de camarón en todo el mundo, provocando grandes pérdidas económicas. Como prevención de infecciones producidas por el virus del Síndrome de la Mancha Blanca (WSSV) y la bacteria Vibrio harveyi en el cultivo de peneidos, se han utilizado inmunoestimulantes de diferente composición química como lipopolisacáridos (LPS), péptidoglucanos, beta-glucanos y pigmentos carotenoides, cuya función principal es activar los sistemas de bio-defensa en peneidos. No existen tratamientos efectivos para controlar la incidencia de WSSV y V. harveyi, por esta razón, se requieren evaluar aditivos alimentarios que funcionen como inmunoestimulantes. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue determinar el efecto de la utilización de 3 pigmentos carotenoides, el β-caroteno, zeaxantina y astaxantina, a dos niveles de inclusión en el alimento (50 y 100 mg/kg), sobre la supervivencia, el crecimiento, la utilización del alimento, y la respuesta inmune de juveniles de camarón blanco Litopenaeus vannamei. No se encontraron diferencias significativas de crecimiento ponderal, tasa de crecimiento, supervivencia, factor de conversión alimenticia, y conteo total de hemocitos entre ninguno de los tratamientos alimenticios. Se encontró una disminución significativa en la actividad enzimática de superóxido dismutasa (SOD) y catalasa en músculo y hepatopáncreas a los treinta días de administrar los pigmentos a las concentraciones de 50 y 100 mg/kg. En el reto viral con WSSV, no se encontraron diferencias significativas entre los tratamientos alimenticios con pigmentos carotenoides, aunque el alimento con β-caroteno permitió obtener una supervivencia ligeramente mayor a las 72 hrs. post-infección (70%) con respecto al control (50%). El análisis histopatológico en el reto viral muestra un daño severo en los camarones de todos los tratamientos, observándose necrosis y cuerpos de inclusión intranuclear en el órgano linfoide, glándula antenal, epitelio cuticular, intestino posterior y branquias. En el reto realizado con V. harveyi, se obtuvo una mayor supervivencia con el tratamiento de β-caroteno (80%) respecto al control (30%). Viral and bacterial diseases have affected in great scale the shrimp cultures all over the world, causing great economic losses. In order to prevent infections produced by the White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) and the bacteria Vibrio harveyi in penaeid cultures, immunostimulants of different chemical composition, like, lipopolysaccharides (LPS), peptideglucan, β-glucan and carotenoid pigments have been used. The role of the inmunostimulants is to activate the bio-defense systems in penaeids. To our knowledge, no effective treatments to control the incidence of WSSV and V. harveyi has been reported, therefore it is needed to find a solution to prevent the infections caused by these pathogens. The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of 3 carotenoid pigments, β-carotene, zeaxanthin and astaxanthin, at two dietary levels (50 and 100 mg/kg), on growth, feed utilization, and immune response of juveniles of white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. No significant differences in weight, growth rate, survival, feed conversion ratio, and total haemocytes count were found between dietary treatments. A significant decrease in superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Catalase activity in muscle and hepatopancreas, after thirty days of administration of the pigments at the two inclusion levels (50 and 100) mg/kg was found. During the viral challenge with WSSV, shrimp fed the diet containing β-carotene showed slightly higher survival at 72 hrs. post-infection (70%) compared to those fed the control diet (50%), nevertheless, no significant differences were found among treatments. Histopathological analysis revealed a severe damage in shrimp from all treatments, characterized by necrosis and intranuclear inclusion bodies in lymphoid organ, antenal gland, cuticular epithelium, posterior intestine and gills.
