FORBIO Climate: Adaptation potential of biodiverse forests in the face of climate change

La recherche a également montré que des écosystèmes plus diversifiés étaient mieux tamponnés face aux perturbations. Ces études furent toutefois majoritairement conduites en prairies. Il est donc essentiel d’approfondir notre compréhension de la capacité adaptative des arbres et des forêts à leurs différents stades de développement, et du rôle exercé par le mélange d’espèces dans l’atténuation du changement climatique. FORBIO Climate entendait examiner la capacité adaptative d’espèces ligneuses ciblées et prédire le comportement futur de ces espèces en Belgique, dans un climat changeant. Le projet a porté sur le chêne (Quercus robur/petraea) et le hêtre (Fagus sylvatica), deux espèces ligneuses de grande importance écologique et économique en Belgique (et en Europe). FORBIO Climate s’est appuyé sur plusieurs infrastructures de recherche en Belgique et à l’étranger (p. ex. le site expérimental FORBIO de Zedelgem, la Plate-forme belge d’observation de la biodiversité, le dispositif expérimental ORPHEE en France, des plantations de type ‘common garden’ en Belgique et au Danemark) pour tester les hypothèses suivantes : (1) les mécanismes épigénétiques de transmission peuvent accroître la capacité adaptative des arbres face au changement climatique durant le stade de reproduction ; (2) aux différents stades de développement successifs, les arbres sont plus résistants et plus résilients au changement climatique en forêts plus diversifiées. Le projet était structuré en cinq modules. Le module 1 a fourni des données climatiques passées qui ont été mises en relation avec les mesures effectuées sur les semis, les fourrés et les arbres matures des modules 2-4 afin d’appréhender l’impact des variations du climat sur le fonctionnement des arbres. Le module 1 a également fourni des simulations à haute résolution du climat futur. Dans le cadre du module 5, les réponses à la sécheresse et à la diversité spécifique ont été extrapolées à l’échelle nationale, et les parties prenantes ont été sondées quant à leur perception du changement climatique et aux mesures d’adaptation. Le module 1 a fourni des données climatiques passées et futures à partir de stations météorologiques et de modèles climatiques régionaux à haute résolution, respectivement. Les données d’observation issues du réseau climatologique belge durant la période 1980-2016 ont d’abord été soumises à des tests de contrôle de qualité. Le krigeage utilisant la topographie comme variable auxiliaire et le krigeage ordinaire ont été ensuite utilisés pour interpoler les données journalières observées de température et de précipitation sur une grille de 4×4 km de résolution couvrant toute la Belgique ; ceci a permis d’obtenir le jeu de données climatiques d’observation final. Pour les simulations du climat, le modèle climatique régional ALARO-0 a été utilisé en s’appuyant sur une approche de ‘downscaling’ où l’atmosphère et la surface terrestre ont été modélisées de manière continue. Le modèle a d’abord été validé pour les conditions climatiques actuelles (1980-2010) par un downscaling dynamique d’un jeu de données à 4 × 4 km de résolution issu d’un modèle climatique global. Pour la simulation historique (1976-2005), une valeur constante de CO2 a été utilisée ; pour les simulations portant sur le futur (2007-2100), des scénarios RCP (Representative Concentration Pathways) 2.6, 4.5 et 8.5 ont été implémentés, qui décrivent le forçage radiatif résultant des gaz à effet de serre, c-à-d la différence entre l’énergie radiative absorbée par la terre et l’énergie ré-émise vers l’espace. Le changement climatique a ensuite été calculé par différence entre les simulations historique et RCP. Les prédictions du modèle ont montré une augmentation consistante de la température de 0,3 to 4,2 °C, selon le scenario RCP, avec un réchauffement plus important dans les Ardennes comparativement au reste du pays. Les précipitations annuelles moyennes ont montré une légère augmentation vers la fin du siècle, en raison d’épisodes de précipitations plus extrêmes, principalement en hiver et en automne. La vitesse du vent n’a pas changé de manière claire, tandis que l’humidité relative montrait une réduction faible mais consistante à la fin du siècle. L’objectif du module 2 était de quantifier les effets épigénétiques de la température parentale sur la performance des semis, en utilisant différents dispositifs de chauffage (sol, branche, transplantation en dispositifs de type ‘common garden’). La température parentale influençait le succès de germination, la phénologie du débourrement et la croissance des semis, et cet effet dépendait des conditions environnementales auxquelles la descendance était soumise. Par conséquent, il est nécessaire de considérer le cycle de vie et les conditions environnementales des parents pour prédire la réponse des arbres au changement climatique. Nous avons aussi considéré la méthylation du DNA comme un mécanisme épigénétique potentiel pour des effets trans-générationnels (dans ce cas, le changement phénologique lié à l’environnement parental). Nous avons utilisé la méthode Methylation Sensitive Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (MSAP) pour examiner la variation naturelle des patrons de méthylation du DNA au sein de plantes individuelles d’un même clône de peuplier hybride. Toutefois, nous n’avons pas pu confirmer le rôle de la méthylation dans les changements phénologiques liés à la température parentale. Des investigations à l’aide de techniques moléculaires plus puissantes comme le séquençage du génôme complet (whole-genome bisulphite sequencing) s’avéreraient nécessaires. Le module 3 a quantifié l’impact de la diversité ligneuse et de la composition spécifique sur la performance de jeunes plants de chênes et de hêtres, et sur l’atténuation du stress lié à une sécheresse. A cette fin, un dispositif d’exclusion des pluies a été installé dans le site FORBIO de Zedelgem, en examinant l’impact sur la croissance et la vitalité des plants, sur des variables abiotiques du sol, sur les microorganismes du sol et sur la transformation de la matière organique du sol. En définitive, une réduction des précipitations de 50% sur 2 ans n’a pas affecté la croissance des arbres mais a influencé les processus biogéochimiques du sol, ce qui pourrait affecter à long terme la disponibilité en nutriments des arbres. Plusieurs processus du sol et la composition microbienne ont aussi été affectés par le mélange d’espèces. Ceci indique que, dans les jeunes peuplements, les processus souterrains pourraient être plus sensibles à la sécheresse et à la diversité ligneuse que les processus aériens. L’association d’autres espèces avec le chêne et le hêtre a provoqué certains effets stabilisants contre la sécheresse. Le module 4 a examiné la performance de chênes et de hêtres matures dans des conditions de stress hydriques, et quantifié la contribution du mélange en terme d’atténuation des effets négatifs du climat sur la croissance d’arbres adultes. Nous avons sélectionné des triplets constitués de chêne et/ou de hêtre, et sondé les arbres dominants pour mesurer la croissance radiale. La croissance radiale a été utilisée pour tester l’impact du mélange sur la croissance individuelle, et plus spécifiquement, sur la réponse à des stress comme la sécheresse. Sur un sous-ensemble de carottes, les cernes formés en 2001 (avec un été normal) et 2003 (avec un été très sec) ont été analysés pour leur teneur en 12C et 13C; le δ^13 C, qui est une mesure de l’exposition des arbres à la sécheresse, a ainsi pu être calculé. Des mesures dendrométriques ont été effectuées autour des arbres sondés pour caractériser le voisinage en termes de compétition et de composition spécifique. Dans les peuplements mélangés de chêne et de hêtre, le hêtre croissait plus rapidement comparativement aux monocultures correspondantes. Cependant, un inconvénient d’une croissance rapide est une consommation d’eau accrue, qui peut provoquer une dessication plus rapide du sol. De fait, nous avons montré que le mélange est bénéfique pour la croissance des hêtres lors d’années à faible croissance, quelles qu’en soient les causes (sécheresse ou autres facteurs environnementaux). Par conséquent, l’effet global du mélange d’espèces sur la productivité du hêtre en mélange reste positif. Le chêne, de son côté, croissait généralement plus lentement en mélange avec le hêtre, parce que le hêtre est plus compétitif. Cependant, ce désavantage pour le chêne devenait plus faible en conditions plus défavorables, et pouvait même s’inverser, par exemple sur des sites secs ; dans ces cas, la croissance du chêne bénéficie d’un mélange avec le hêtre. Ceci signifie également que lorsque les conditions deviennent plus défavorables, la croissance du chêne sera moins affectée en mélange qu’en monoculture. Dans ce contexte, le mélange peut être considéré comme une mesure de sécurité à la fois pour le chêne et pour le hêtre. Un point fort de ce module est aussi l’établissement d’un réseau de 8 triplets à base de chêne et de hêtre, et l’obtention d’un jeu de données inédit portant sur la croissance radiale et le voisinage. En fait, ces sites servent déjà pour des prélèvements de sols dans le cadre d’autres projets de recherche sur le mélange. Le module 5 est intervenu à un niveau plus intégré en termes d’échelles spatiale et temporelle, et de stades de développement forestier, sur le rôle de la diversité des arbres dans un contexte de changement climatique. Dans une première étape, les effets du changement climatique sur la dynamique des peuplements de hêtre et de chêne à l’échelle nationale ont été investigués. Des données du réseau ICP Forests, des inventaires forestiers régionaux de Flandre et de Wallonie, la carte numérique des sols de Belgique, le jeu de données climatiques du module 1 et un modèle digital de terrain ont été utilisés pour appréhender la croissance et l’état sanitaire des arbres; en particulier, elles ont permis d’examiner si la résilience à la sécheresse était liée à une augmentation de la diversité ligneuse, et si des peuplements mélangés pouvaient avoir une croissance supérieure aux peuplements purs. La défoliation du hêtre et du chêne a augmenté sensiblement depuis les années 1990. En considérant les réponses à long terme à des changements de température et de précipitation, la sévérité de la défoliation était plus faible à des niveaux plus élevés de diversité ligneuse. Le passage d’un effet négatif à un effet positif de la richesse spécifique sur l’état sanitaire, sous l’effet d’une augmentation du stress hydrique, n’avait jamais été reporté pour des écosystèmes en dehors de conditions expérimentales. La sécheresse causa également une réduction marquée de la croissance des arbres feuillus, en particulier le hêtre, même si nous avons observé que les arbres croissant en mélange étaient plus résilients à la sécheresse que ceux croissant en monoculture. En second lieu, un questionnaire a été réalisé pour documenter la perception des propriétaires et gestionnaires forestiers quant à la vulnérabilité des forêts au changement climatique et à la mise en oeuvre d’actions spécifiques pour augmenter la résilience des forêts. Nous avons trouvé qu’il y avait un net déséquilibre entre la connaissance des impacts des changements climatiques et les pratiques d’adaptation effectivement mises en place par les gestionnaires forestiers, probablement en raison d’un manque d’information locale pertinente et pratique. Troisièmement, une revue systématique de la littérature publiée sur les effets de la diversité ligneuse dans un contexte de changements climatiques est toujours en cours. Nos résultats démontrent que la gestion des chênaies et des hêtraies pour maintenir ou accroître la diversité taxonomique, fonctionnelle et/ou génétique contribue à atténuer la vulnérabilité de ces forêts à la sécheresse dans des conditions climatiques changeantes. Des peuplements mélangés garantissent aux gestionnaires davantage d’options pour le développement futur du peuplement, puisqu’ils diminuent la vulnérabilité à laquelle les monocultures sont soumises au vu des changements climatiques futurs. Le suivi harmonisé à long terme de la vitalité des forêts est une méthode efficace pour détecter les changements de l’état sanitaire et de la productivité induits par le changement climatique et la diversité ligneuse. L’augmentation continue de la qualité des données s’est avéré payant, et cet effort de monitoring mérite donc d’être poursuivi dans le temps. Des recherches ultérieures pourraient cibler une gamme plus large d’espèces et des changements climatiques multiples dans différents écosystèmes pour mieux prédire la réponse des arbres au changement climatique.

英语. Climate change is expected to have a large impact on the distribution, composition and functioning of forest ecosystems worldwide due to the limited migration and adaptation potential of trees. Creating resistant and resilient forests is thus a key challenge for forest management. It has been suggested that epigenetic mechanisms may increase the capacity of trees to survive in a changing environment, but the extent and importance of these mechanisms in seedlings and saplings are still unknown. Research has also shown that more biodiverse ecosystems are better buffered against disturbances. Yet, these studies were predominantly performed in grasslands. More insight into the adaptive capacity of trees and forests in their consecutive life and development stages, respectively, and the potential buffering effect of tree species admixing to climate change is thus urgently needed. FORBIO Climate aimed at scrutinizing the adaptive capacity of particular tree species and predicting the future performance of these tree species under climate change in Belgium. The project focused on oak (Quercus robur/petraea) and beech (Fagus sylvatica), two tree species with high ecological and economic significance in Belgium (and Europe). FORBIO Climate capitalized upon multiple research infrastructures in Belgium and abroad (e.g. the FORBIO site in Zedelgem, the Belgian Observational Biodiversity Platform, the ORPHEE experiment in France, common gardens in Belgium and Denmark) to test the following hypotheses: (1) epigenetic inheritance mechanisms can increase the adaptive capacity of trees to climate change during the reproduction stage; (2) across subsequent tree development stages, tree performance is more resistant and resilient to climate change in more biodiverse forests. The project was structured in five work packages (WPs). In short, WP1 provided past climate data that were linked to the measurements on seedlings, saplings and mature trees in WP2-4 to assess the effects of climate variation on tree performance. WP1 also provided simulations of the future climate. In WP5, drought and diversity responses were scaled up to a national level and stakeholders were inquired about their perception of climate change effects and adaptation. In more detail, WP1 provided past and future climate data from selected weather stations and high-resolution Regional Climate models, respectively. Observational data from the Belgian climatological network for the period 1980-2016 were first subjected to quality control tests. Kriging using the topography as drift, and ordinary kriging were then used to interpolate the observational data on daily temperature and precipitation, respectively, on a regular 4x4 km grid over Belgium, resulting in the observational climate dataset. For the climate simulations, the Regional Climate Model ALARO-0 was used with a downscaling approach where atmosphere and land surface were modelled in a continuous way. First, the model was validated for the present climate conditions (1980-2010) by dynamical downscaling of a global climate model dataset at 4x4 km resolution. For the historical simulation (1976-2005), a constant value for the CO2-equivalent was used; for the future simulation (2007-2100), the so-called Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP 2.6, 4.5 and 8.5) were implemented, which describe the radiative forcing from greenhouse gasses, i.e. the difference between insolation (sunlight) absorbed by the Earth and the energy radiated back to space. Climate change was then calculated as the difference between the historical and the RCP simulations. The model predictions indicated a consistent T increase of 0.3 to 4.2 °C, dependent on the RCP scenario, with a larger warming for the Ardennes compared to the rest of the country. Mean annual precipitation showed a slight increase by the end of the century due to more extreme precipitation events, especially in winter and autumn. Wind speed did not change in a clear way while relative humidity showed an indistinct but consistent decrease towards the end of the century. The aim of WP2 was to quantify the epigenetic effects of parental temperature on seedling performance, using various warming treatments (soil warming, branch warming, translocation to common gardens). Parental temperature influenced the germination success, bud phenology and growth of the seedlings and this effect depended on the environmental conditions in the offspring generation. Hence, there is a need to consider the life history and parental environmental conditions to predict the response of trees to climate change. We also investigated DNA methylation as a potential epigenetic mechanism for transgenerational effects. We used Methylation Sensitive Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (MSAP) analysis to examine the natural variation in genome-wide DNA methylation patterns within individuals plants of a single poplar hybrid clone (genotype). However, we could not confirm that methylation helps to explain the phenological changes mediated by the parental temperature. Further investigation is necessary using more powerful molecular methods like whole-genome bisulphite sequencing techniques. WP3 quantified the impact of tree diversity and composition on the overall performance of oak and beech saplings and on the mitigation of drought stress. For this purpose, a drought experiment using rainout shelters was installed on the FORBIO-site in Zedelgem, examining the impact on sapling growth and vitality, abiotic soil variables, soil microorganisms and soil organic matter transformation. Overall, a 2-year 50% precipitation reduction did not affect tree growth but influenced soil biogeochemical processes, which could alter nutrient availability for trees in the long term. Several soil processes and microbial composition were affected by tree species admixing. This indicates that, in young forest stands, belowground processes might be more sensitive to drought and tree diversity than aboveground processes. Tree species admixing to oak and beech showed some degree of stabilizing effects against drought. WP4 examined the performance of mature oak and beech trees under drought stress and quantified the contribution of tree diversity to the mitigation of adverse climate effects on mature tree growth. We selected triplets of oak and beech and cored dominant trees to measure the ring widths. Tree ring measurements were used to test whether mixing had an impact on individual tree growth, more specifically on the sensitivity of growth to stresses like drought. On a subset of the cores, the rings of 2001, with a normal summer, and 2003, with a very dry summer, were analyzed for 12C and 13C content, from which δ^13 C was calculated, which is a measure for the extent to which the drought was experienced by the tree. Dendrometric measurements on the surrounding trees were used to characterize the neighbourhood of the trees in terms of competition and species composition. In mixed oak-beech stands, beech grew faster compared to its monocultures. However, a drawback of fast growth is the need for more water, which might cause them drying out the soil quicker. Yet, we have shown that mixing is de facto beneficial for the growth of beech trees in tough years (i.e., years of slow growth), regardless of whether this is caused by droughts or other environmental factors. Thus, the overall effect of tree diversity on the productivity of mixed beech stands remains positive. Oak, on the other hand, generally grew more slowly when mixed with beech, because beech is a better competitor. However, this disadvantage for oak became smaller in harsher conditions, and may even be reversed, for example on dry sites. In these cases, oak growth actually benefits from growing in a mixture with beech. This also means that, when conditions harshen, oak growth will be less affected in mixtures than in monocultures. In this sense, mixing can be seen as a safety measure for both oak and beech. An important output of this work package is the establishment of a network of eight oak-beech triplets, together with a collection of data on tree growth and neighbourhood. In fact, the sites already serve as soil sampling sites for other research on species mixing in forests. WP5 acted on a more integrated level in terms of time, space and forest development stage, on the role of tree diversity in a context of climate change. In a first step, nation-wide effects of climate change on stand dynamics of beech and oak stands were investigated. Data of ICP Forests, the regional forest inventory of Flanders and Wallonia, the digital soil map of Belgium, the climate dataset obtained in WP1 and a digital terrain model were used to assess tree health and growth, to examine whether drought resilience was correlated with tree diversity and whether mixed-species stands can overyield monospecific stands. Crown defoliation of beech and oak has significantly increased since the 1990s. The severity of defoliation was lower at higher tree diversity levels when considering long-term responses to changes in temperature and precipitation. The observed shift from a negative to a positive effect of species richness on forest condition, caused by increased water stress, has never been reported from real ecosystems outside experimental conditions. Drought also caused a marked growth reduction in deciduous trees, especially for beech, although we found that trees growing in mixtures were more resilient to drought than those growing in monocultures. Second, a questionnaire was administered to inform on the perception of forest owners and managers on the vulnerability of forests to climate change and the extent to which specific actions to enhance the resilience of forests are being implemented in practice. We found that there is a marked imbalance between the large awareness about climate change impacts and the adaptation practices put in place by forest managers for coping with it, probably due to a lack of locally relevant and practical information. Third, a systematic review of the published literature on tree diversity effects in a climate change context is still ongoing. Our results corroborate evidence that managing oak and beech forests to retain or increase tree diversity is a step forward to mitigate the vulnerability of these forests to climate change. Mixed stands grant managers with more options for future stand development, as they decrease the vulnerability posed on monocultures in light of future climate changes. Standardized, long-term monitoring of forest vitality is an effective method to detect climate change-induced and tree diversity-mediated trends in forest health and productivity. The continuous improvement in the quality of data that has been achieved so far has proven to be an effort that merits improved and extended continuation. Further research may focus on a wider range of tree species and multiple climate change drivers across various ecosystems to predict the response of trees to climate change better.

De voorspelde klimaatverandering zal wereldwijd een grote invloed hebben op de verspreiding, samenstelling en het functioneren van bosecosystemen door de beperkte migratie- en adaptatiecapaciteit van bomen. Het creëren van resistente en veerkrachtige bossen is dus een belangrijke uitdaging voor het bosbeheer. Er wordt gesuggereerd dat epigenetische mechanismen de capaciteit van bomen om stand te houden in een veranderend milieu kunnen verhogen, hoewel de omvang en het belang van deze mechanismen nog niet uitgeklaard zijn. Bovendien heeft onderzoek, voornamelijk uitgevoerd in graslanden, aangetoond dat meer diverse ecosystemen beter gebufferd zijn tegen verstoringen. Meer inzicht in de adaptatiecapaciteit van bomen en bossen in opeenvolgende levens-, respectievelijk ontwikkelingsstadia, voor klimaatverandering is dus dringend nodig. FORBIO Climate had als doelstelling de adaptatiecapaciteit van bepaalde boomsoorten nauwkeurig te onderzoeken en hun toekomstige performantie onder klimaatverandering in België te voorspellen. De focus van het project lag op eik (Quercus robur/petraea) en beuk (Fagus sylvatica), twee loofboomsoorten met hoge ecologische en economische waarde in België (en Europa). Het project maakte gebruik van verschillende onderzoeksinfrastructuren in België en erbuiten (o.a. de FORBIO-site in Zedelgem, het Belgisch Observationeel Biodiversiteitsplatform, het ORPHEE-experiment in Frankrijk, common gardens in België en Denemarken) om de volgende hypotheses te testen: (1) epigenetische mechanismen kunnen de adaptatiecapaciteit van bomen voor klimaatveranderingen tijdens hun reproductie verhogen, en (2) bomen die groeien in een meer biodivers bos vertonen een hogere weerstand en veerkracht t.o.v. klimaatverandering, ongeacht het levensstadium. FORBIO Climate was gestructureerd in vijf werkpakketten (WP’s). Kort samengevat leverde WP1 historische data die gelinkt werden aan metingen op zaailingen, jonge en volwassen bomen in WP2-4 om het effect van klimaatvariaties op boomperformantie te bepalen. WP1 leverde ook simulaties van het toekomstige klimaat. In WP5 werden droogte- en diversiteitsresponsen opgeschaald tot een nationaal niveau en werden boseigenaars- en beheerders gevraagd naar hun visie op effecten van klimaatverandering en adaptatie. Meer specifiek leverde WP1 historische data van een selectie van weerstations, en toekomstige klimatologische data gebruik makend van een high-resolution Regionaal Klimaatmodel. De observationele data van het Belgisch klimatologisch netwerk voor de periode 1980-2016 werden eerst onderworpen aan kwaliteitscontroles. Kriging (met topografie als drift) en ordinary kriging werden daarna gebruikt om de observationele data omtrent dagelijkse temperatuur en neerslag respectievelijk, te interpoleren op een 4x4 km raster over België, resulterend in de observationele klimaatdataset. Voor de klimaatsimulaties werd het Regionaal Klimaatmodel ALARO-0 gebruikt waarbij atmosfeer en landoppervlakte op een continue manier gemodelleerd werden. Eerst werd het model gevalideerd voor de huidige klimaatcondities (1980-2010) door een globale klimaatmodeldataset dynamisch neer te schalen op 4x4 km resolutie. Voor de historische simulatie (1976-2005) werd een constante waarde voor het CO2-equivalent gebruikt. Voor het simuleren van het toekomstige klimaat (2007-2100) werden de zogenaamde Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP 2.6, 4.5 en 8.5) geïmplementeerd, die de stralingsforcering van broeikasgassen beschrijven (dit is het verschil tussen de instraling, geabsorbeerd door de aarde, en de energie die teruggestraald wordt naar de ruimte). Klimaatverandering werd dan berekend als het verschil tussen de historische en de toekomstige simulaties. De modelresultaten wezen op een consistente temperatuurstijging van 0.3 tot 4.2°C, afhankelijk van het RCP-scenario, met een grotere opwarming voor de Ardennen in vergelijking met de rest van het land. De gemiddelde jaarlijkse neerslag toonde een kleine toename tegen het einde van de eeuw als gevolg van extremere neerslaggebeurtenissen, voornamelijk in herfst en winter. De windsnelheid wijzigde niet significant terwijl de relatieve vochtigheid een onopvallende maar consistente daling naar het einde van de eeuw toe vertoonde. Het doel van WP2 was het kwantificeren van epigenetische effecten van temperatuur in de ouderomgeving op de performantie van de zaailingen. We onderzochten het effect van verschillende warmtebehandelingen (opwarmen bodem, opwarmen takken, verplaatsen naar common gardens). De temperatuur in de ouderomgeving beïnvloedde het succes van de kieming, knopfenologie en de groei van de zaailingen. Dit effect van de ouderomgeving was afhankelijk van de omgevingscondities van de zaailingen. Het is bijgevolg noodzakelijk om de levensgeschiedenis en ouderomgeving in rekening te brengen bij het voorspellen van de respons van bomen op klimaatverandering. We onderzochten eveneens of DNA methylatie als epigenetisch mechanisme voor transgeneratie effecten kan optreden. We gebruikten een MSAP analyse (Methylation Sensitive Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism) om de natuurlijke variatie in DNA methylatie patronen binnen individuele planten van een welbepaalde hybride kloon van populier te onderzoeken. We konden echter niet bevestigen dat methylatie kan gebruikt worden voor het verklaren van fenologische veranderingen als gevolg van wijzigingen in de ouderomgeving. Bijgevolg is verder onderzoek met krachtiger moleculaire methoden noodzakelijk. WP3 kwantificeerde de invloed van boomsoortdiversiteit en –samenstelling op de algemene performantie van jonge eiken en beuken en op het mitigeren van droogtestress. Op de FORBIO site in Zedelgem werd een droogte-experiment geïnstalleerd, om de invloed van droogte op boomgroei en –vitaliteit, abiotische bodemvariabelen, bodemmicro-organismen en transformatie van bodemorganische materie te onderzoeken. Een halvering van de neerslaghoeveelheid had geen invloed op de boomgroei maar wel op de bodemchemische processen. Dit kan op lange termijn een verandering van de nutriëntenbeschikbaarheid veroorzaken. Verschillende bodemprocessen en de microbiële samenstelling werden beïnvloed door het mengen van boomsoorten. Deze resultaten tonen aan dat ondergrondse processen in jonge bosbestanden gevoeliger kunnen zijn voor droogte en boomsoortdiversiteit dan bovengrondse processen. Het mengen van eik en beuk met andere boomsoorten had een stabiliserend effect ten opzichte van droogte. WP4 onderzocht de invloed van droogtestress op de performantie van volwassen eiken en beuken en de bijdrage van boomsoortdiversiteit op het mitigeren van schadelijke effecten van klimaatsverandering op de groei van volwassen bomen. We selecteerden tripletten van eik en beuk en boorden dominante bomen aan om de jaarringbreedtes te meten. Deze meetresultaten werden gebruikt om te testen of het mengen van boomsoorten een invloed heeft op individuele boomgroei, meer specifiek op de gevoeligheid van groei voor stressfactoren zoals droogte. De jaarringen van 2001, met een normale zomer, en 2003, met een heel droge zomer, werden op een subset van de boorstalen geanalyseerd op het gehalte aan 12C en 13C, waarmee δ^13 C werd berekend. Deze variabele geeft aan hoe sterk de boom de droogteperiode heeft ervaren. Dendrometrische metingen op de naburige bomen werden gebruikt om de omgeving van de bomen op vlak van competitie en soortsamenstelling te karakteriseren. Beuk groeide sneller in mengingen met eik, in vergelijking met zijn monoculturen. Snellere groei vereist echter meer water waardoor de bodem sneller uitgedroogd geraakt. Desalniettemin toonden onze resultaten aan dat het mengen van boomsoorten de facto voordelig is voor de groei van beuk in moeilijke jaren (i.e. jaren van trage groei), ongeacht welke omgevingsfactor dit veroorzaakt heeft. Het globale effect van boomsoortdiversiteit op de productiviteit van gemengde beukenbestanden is dus positief. Eik groeide daarentegen trager wanneer gemengd met beuk, gezien beuk concurrentiekrachtiger is. Dit nadeel werd echter kleiner in harde omstandigheden, en kan zelfs omkeren, vb. op droge gronden. In dit geval profiteert de groei van eik van de menging met beuk. Dit betekent ook dat, naargelang de condities harder worden, de groei van eik minder beïnvloed wordt in mengingen in vergelijking met monoculturen. Het mengen van boomsoorten kan dus beschouwd worden als een veiligheidsmaatregel voor zowel eik als beuk. Een belangrijk resultaat van dit werkpakket is het uitbouwen van een netwerk van acht tripletten van eik en beuk, samen met het verzamelen van data over boomgroei en omgevingscondities. De tripletten worden ondertussen in andere studies over soortmengingen in bossen gebruikt. WP5 onderzocht de rol van boomsoortdiversiteit in een context van klimaatverandering op een hoger, integrerend niveau op vlak van tijd, ruimte en bosontwikkelingsfase. In een eerste stap werden over gans België de effecten van klimaatveranderingen op de dynamiek van beuken- en eikenbestanden onderzocht. Data van ICP Forests, de regionale bosinventarisaties van Vlaanderen en Wallonië, de digitale bodemkaart van België, de klimaatdataset uit WP1 en een digitaal terreinmodel werden gebruikt om de gezondheid en groei van bomen te bepalen, om te onderzoeken of de veerkracht ten opzichte van droogte gecorreleerd is met boomsoortdiversiteit en of de productiviteit van gemengde bosbestanden groter is dan hun monoculturen. Het bladverlies bij beuk en eik is sinds 1990 significant toegenomen De ernst van het bladverlies was lager bij hogere boomsoortdiversiteit wanneer gekeken werd naar lange termijn reacties op temperatuur en neerslag. Als gevolg van toenemende droogtestress, observeerden we een verschuiving van het effect van boomsoortdiversiteit op de toestand van het bos van negatief naar positief. Dit werd tot nu toe enkel gerapporteerd voor experimentele situaties maar nooit eerder voor echte bosecosystemen. Droogte veroorzaakte ook een duidelijke reductie van de groei van loofbomen, vooral voor beuk. Bomen in mengingen bleken veerkrachtiger ten opzichte van droogte dan bomen in monoculturen. In een tweede stap werd een enquête gebruikt om te informeren naar de perceptie van boseigenaars en –beheerders op de kwetsbaarheid van bossen voor klimaatverandering en de mate waarin bepaalde acties, gedoeld op het verhogen van de veerkracht van bossen, toegepast worden. We merkten een duidelijk onevenwicht op tussen het grote bewustzijn over de impact van klimaatverandering enerzijds, en de adaptatiemaatregelen die door bosbeheerders toegepast worden om met klimaatverandering om te gaan, wellicht ten gevolge van een gebrek aan lokaal relevante en praktische informatie. In een derde stap, die nog steeds aan de gang is, wordt een systematische review van gepubliceerde literatuur omtrent boomsoortdiversiteitseffecten in een context van klimaatverandering uitgevoerd. Onze resultaten bevestigen dat het beheren van eiken- en beukenbossen met als doel de boomsoortdiversiteit te behouden of te verhogen, een stap vooruit is in het mitigeren van de kwetsbaarheid van deze bossen voor klimaatverandering. Gemengde bestanden geven de bosbeheerders meer opties voor toekomstige bestandsontwikkeling, gezien de kwetsbaarheid ten opzichte van klimaatsveranderingen daalt in vergelijking met monoculturen. Gestandaardiseerde, lange termijn opvolging van de bosvitaliteit is een efficiënte methode om effecten van klimaatverandering en boomsoortdiversiteit op bosgezondheid en –productiviteit op te sporen. Het continue streven naar verbetering van de datakwaliteit blijkt een waardevolle inspanning die zeker verdergezet dient te worden. Voor toekomstig onderzoek zou het interessant zijn meer boomsoorten, verschillende sturende factoren van klimaatverandering en diverse ecosystemen op te nemen zodoende de respons van bomen op klimaatverandering beter te kunnen voorspellen. klimaatverandering, epigenetica, Fagus sylvatica, Quercus sp., boomsoortdiversiteit
