We are witnessing limited and decreasing reserves of expensive, imported fossil fuels, the use of which causes multiple environmental pollution, increased emission of various harmful pollutants and carbon dioxide, contributes to the appearance of the greenhouse effect and climate change. Therefore, in recent decades, there has been an increasing search for adequate renewable energy sources, which will enable an increase in the degree of energy independence from the import of fossil fuels, which will enable a higher degree of energy efficiency, all while protecting and preserving the environment. Biofuel production from biomass is one way to achieve these goals. Our country is rich in biomass of cereals and oilseeds, which could be directed to the production of biofuels. There are also certain areas of land on the territory of our country that were not used for the production of agricultural products. Considering the favorable composition and properties of sorghum, the modest requirements in terms of soil quality, as well as the ability of sorghum to successfully adapt to different environmental conditions, research was conducted on the possibility of using this important cereal (which is classified as the most important and most represented cereal on the international level) as potential raw materials for biofuel production. The results of the conducted research, which are presented in this scientific paper, indicate multiple possibilities of using sorghum in the production of biofuels.
