Handling of food waste is a challenging task. Therefore, reducing volume of food waste through utilization of waste as resource material is considered in the present work. Hence the objective on the study is management of food waste through biogas production. The food waste generated from VVCE hostel was used as feed material for gas production. Parameters like pH, BOD, COD, Moisture content, Nitrate, Phosphate, Sulphate and Calorific value of raw and digestate were analyzed. Two mix proportion of food waste and horse dung considered for the study were 1:0.17 and 1: 0.21, pH of digestate was observed to be acidic due to acidogenesis phase. Organic load was reduced in the digested sludge. Maximum amount of about 1080mL of biogas released on second day for the proportion of 1:0.21. Calorific value obtained for digested proportion 1:0.17 and 1:0.21 was observed to be 36317 and 34587kJ/kg respectively. Hence it can be concluded that food waste generated in VVCE hostel with high calorific value can be efficiently used as fuel.
