Historical circumstances, often unrelated to silvicultural needs, have led to the use of techniques that have become traditional and are often accepted without consideration of their efficiency and costs. Much research remains to be done and this review is intended to serve as an introduction to an extensive field of investigation which it is hoped to explore further.
