Salinity and water level as factors in the distribution of vegetation in the cienega of NW Campeche, Mexico | Salinidad y el nivel del agua como factores en la distribución de la vegetación en la ciénaga del NW de Campeche, México

The purpose of this study was to establish if the presence of different plant associations (cattail vegetation, pure stands of Avicennia germinans, pure stands of Rhizophora mangle, mixed mangrove stands, and Rhizophora-Eleocharis association) correspond to significant differences in physical factors (surface water level, water salinity). Field work was accomplished in the ‘petenes’ (hammocks) region, along the NW coast of Campeche, Mexico. Salinity increases with the dry season, and rapidly decreases with the onset of the rains. Rhizophora stands experience the highest salinity year-round, and the cattail association the lowest. For each association, salinity was significantly higher before the rains start, compared to the end of the rainy period. Water level decreases with the dry period and increases with the rains. At the end of the rainy period, water level is significantly higher, with significant differences between associations. Plant associations studied correspond to significantly different levels of the abiotic factors considered. Results show that each community has particular conditions, and suggest that high salinities at the end of the dry period and the extended inundation period during the rains are determinant for the establishment of species in the communities.

El objetivo de este estudio fue establecer si la presencia de ciertas asociaciones vegetales (i.e., tular, manglar de Avicennia germinans, manglar de Rhizophora mangle, manglar mixto, asociación Rhizophora-Eleocharis) se relaciona con diferencias significativas de factores abióticos (i.e., nivel de agua superficial y salinidad del agua). El estudio se desarrolló en la región de los petenes, a lo largo de la costa NW de Campeche, México. Se encontró que la salinidad se incrementa con la sequía y disminuye rápidamente con las lluvias. El manglar de Rhizophora tuvo la mayor concentración de sales en el año y la menor el tular. Para cada asociación, la salinidad fue significativamente mayor al finalizar la época seca que al terminar las lluvias. El nivel de agua disminuye al avanzar la sequía, se incrementa en junio con las precipitaciones pluviales y en julio se acerca a su máxima expresión. Sin embargo, encontramos diferencias significativas entre todas las asociaciones. Los resultados indican que la presencia de cada una de las comunidades estudiadas corresponde a condiciones específicas en términos de los factores abióticos considerados y sugieren que las altas salinidades del final de la temporada de sequía y la prolongada inundación durante la estación de lluvias, son determinantes para el establecimiento de las especies en las comunidades.
