A comparison of different indirect techniques to evaluate volcanic intact rock strength

The efficiency of different methods that are used to evaluate volcanic intact rock strength is compared that includes Schmidt hammers, point load tests and uniaxial compression tests. The Schmidt hammer records the rebound height of the mass (R) on a linear scale and gives an indication of the strength of the material being tested. The two types of Schmidt hammers (L- and N-type), with different impact energies are used that shows results as the rebound height RLand RN for the L- and N-type Schmidt hammers, respectively. The other method used is point load test that provides strength measurements of irregular fragments of rocks or of rock cores, with all rock dimensions being greater than 50 mm. The last method is uniaxial compression that shows little scatter and clear logarithmic increase of uniaxial compressive strength with increasing unit weight. The studies showed that Schmidt hammers can give results similar in quality to uniaxial compression tests.

Se compara la eficacia de los diferentes métodos que se utilizan para evaluar la resistencia de las rocas volcánicas intactas, entre los que se incluyen los martillos Schmidt, los ensayos de carga puntual y los ensayos de compresión uniaxial. El martillo Schmidt registra la altura de rebote de la masa (R) en una escala lineal y da una indicación de la resistencia del material ensayado. Se utilizan dos tipos de martillos Schmidt (tipo L y N), con diferentes energías de impacto que muestran los resultados como la altura de rebote RLy RN para los martillos Schmidt tipo L y N, respectivamente. El otro método utilizado es la prueba de carga puntual que proporciona mediciones de resistencia de fragmentos irregulares de rocas o de núcleos de roca, con todas las dimensiones de la roca mayores de 50 mm. El último método es el de compresión uniaxial, que muestra poca dispersión y un claro aumento logarítmico de la resistencia a la compresión uniaxial con el aumento del peso de la unidad. Los estudios mostraron que los martillos Schmidt pueden dar resultados de calidad similar a los ensayos de compresión uniaxial.
