Untersuchungen zur Wirksamkeit eines Neem-Präparates (Mite-Stop ® ) auf die Entwicklungsstadien der Roten Vogelmilbe Dermanyssus gallinae | Studies on the efficacy of a neem-product (Mite-Stop ® ) against the developmental stages of the poultry red mite Dermanyssus gallinae

Fünf Neem-Präparate der Alpha-Biocare GmbH (Düsseldorf) wurden auf ihre Wirksamkeit gegen die Rote Vogelmilbe Dermanyssus gallinae untersucht. Dabei erwiesen sich das Neem-Feinfiltrat und der Neem-dbE-Extrakt als besonders gut wirksam. Aufgrund dieser guten Ergebnisse wurde das Neem-Präparat Mite-Stop® entwickelt, das in einem speziellen Verfahren aus dem Samen des Neembaumes (Azadirachta indica A. Juss.) gewonnen wird. Das wesentliche Ziel dieser Arbeit war es, das Potential dieses Neem-Präparates als pflanz-liches Akarizid für die Bekämpfung der Roten Vogelmilbe (Dermanyssus gallinae) zu unter- suchen. Die Wirksamkeit wurde sowohl unter Labor- als auch unter Praxisbedingungen ge-testet. Die Kontakt- und Gasphasentoxizität wurde mittels vier verschiedener Applikationsmethoden untersucht: Methode A (Benetzung einzelner Milben), Methode B1 (Kontakt mit feuchtem Akarizid), Methode B2 (Kontakt mit getrocknetem Akarizid) und Methode C (Akarizide Wirkung über die Gasphase). Es zeigte sich, dass das Akarizid bei direktem Kontakt schon in sehr kleinen Mengen für alle Milbenstadien toxisch ist. Die Gas-phase erwies sich für Larven, Nymphen und Adulte ebenfalls als toxisch. Weitere Unter- suchungen bezüglich der Stabilität, Haltbarkeit, Wirkungsdauer und der repellierenden Wirkung wurden durchgeführt. Ein mit dem Neem-Präparat imprägniertes Filterpapier besaß für mehr als 11 Tage eine gute Wirksamkeit gegen die Rote Vogelmilbe. Ein repellierender Effekt konnte nicht festgestellt werden. Die im Stallbau verwendeten Materialien Holz und Beton wurden ebenfalls behandelt und die akarizide Wirkung gegen alle Milbenstadien untersucht. Um die Anwendung unter Praxisbedingungen zu testen, wurde ein Hühnerstall innerhalb von sieben Tagen zweimal mit 1:50 verdünntem Mite-Stop® behandelt. Die Stärke der Milbenpopulation wurde vor, während und nach der Behandlung mittels im Stall aus-gebrachter Fallen aus Wellpappe bestimmt. Bereits die erste Sprühbehandlung reduzierte die Milbenpopulation um 66,86%. Nach der zweiten Behandlung hatte sich die Milbenpopulation um 89% reduziert. In einem zweiten Hühnerstall wurden zwei Bereiche, die einen starken Befall mit der Roten Vogelmilbe aufwiesen, mit 1:30 bzw. 1:50 verdünntem Mite-Stop® be-handelt. In beiden Bereichen war das Neem-Präparat zu 100% wirksam. Licht- und rasterelektronenmikroskopische Untersuchungen dienten dazu, morphologische Veränderungen an den Milben zu erkennen. Zum Teil wurden deutliche Veränderungen an der Kutikula festgestellt. Das Neem-Präparat scheint bei direktem Kontakt zu einer Schädigung der Kutikula zu führen, in deren Folge es zur Dehydratation und zum Tod der Milbe kommt.

Five neem products of Alpha-Biocare GmbH (Düsseldorf, Germany) were tested for their acaricidal efficacy against the poultry red mite Dermanyssus gallinae. Neem-fine filtrate and neem-dbe-extract proved to be very efficacious. Because of the good results the product Mite-Stop® was developed. It is a special formulation of an extract of the seeds of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica A. Juss.). The main aim of this work was to investigate the potential of this neem product as a botanical acaricide for the control of the poultry red mite Derma-nyssus gallinae. The efficacy was tested under laboratory conditions as well as in poultry houses. Four different methods of application were used in a filter paper bioassay to evaluate contact and vapour phase toxicity tests. Method A (wetting of individual mites), method B1 (contact with wet acaricide), method B2 (contact with dried acaricide), and method C (vapour phase toxicity). The neem product proved to be already toxic in very small doses for every developmental stage. Fumigant toxicity was proven against larvae, nymphs, and adults. In-vestigations were conducted on the stability, storage life, effective period, and repellent effect. Filter papers impregnated with the acaricide remained efficacious for more than 11 days. There was no repellent effect. Further investigations showed that it has an acaricidal activity against all developmental stages on wood and concrete, two materials which are often found in poultry houses. In order to investigate the efficacy under field conditions a poultry house was sprayed twice within a 7-day period using 1:50 diluted Mite-Stop®. Cardboard traps were used to assess the mite population before, during, and after the treatment. After the first spraying the mite population was reduced by 66.86%. After the second spraying the total of the mite population had been reduced by 89%. In another poultry house defined areas in-fested with poultry red mites were treated with 1:30 and 1:50 diluted Mite-Stop®. The efficacy was 100% in both areas. Light and scanning electron microscope analyses were carried out to detect any changes in morphology. Some of the treated mites showed morphological changes in the cuticle. A direct contact with the neem product can lead to severe damages in the structure of the cuticle which are likely to cause dehydration and death of the mite.
