Interacciones ecológicas y modelos de distribución actual y futura en lepidópteros en Andalucía

Las mariposas constituyen una fracción importante de la biodiversidad y contribuyen a canalizar el flujo de energía desde los productores primarios hacia niveles tróficos superiores. Muchas especies de mariposas diurnas presentan una estrecha relación con las plantas de las que dependen para completar sus ciclos biológicos, y también una alta especificidad en el uso de hábitats. Son sensibles a cambios ambientales, cambios en la vegetación y en la estructura del paisaje, y por tanto son unos magníficos bioindicadores. Sin embargo, el conocimiento de la ecología y la distribución real de muchas de las especies de ropalóceros ibéricos es aún insuficiente. Los factores ambientales modulan la presencia o ausencia y la abundancia de las mariposas en un lugar determinado. Los modelos de distribución de especies permiten analizar la influencia de muchos de estos factores en las distribuciones observadas, así como su importancia como componentes del nicho de las especies. Este conocimiento, especialmente en el caso de especies que presentan áreas de distribución más restringidas, es un instrumento fundamental para proponer medidas de conservación y para prever efectos del cambio climático. Por otra parte los factores bióticos son también importantes, pero son más elusivos y difíciles de investigar. En particular, las interacciones que se materializan entre especies que componen un gremio compartiendo un mismo recurso, las interacciones mutualistas con hormigas o las antagónicas con parasitoides, así como las adaptaciones para evitar las condiciones poco favorables para el desarrollo (p. ej. diapausa) son de vital importancia y sin embargo existen importantes lagunas de conocimiento en este ámbito. Por todo ello en ésta Tesis Doctoral se analizan, en primer lugar, las interacciones antagónicas que se producen en un gremio formado por tres especies de licénidos (Tomares ballus, Lampides boeticus y Leptotes pirithous) que coexisten utilizando la leguminosa Erophaca baetica como planta nutricia en Sierra Morena. Estas tres especies de mariposas tienen un amplio solapamiento espacio-temporal en la puesta de huevos en los mismos rodales de plantas, así como en los mismos brotes, inflorescencias y frutos. Nuestras observaciones de campo demuestran que las puestas de las tres especies solapan en el tiempo y en el espacio incluso a escala de rodales de plantas, de plantas e incluso de brotes individuales, de inflorescencias e incluso de frutos. Los resultados de un experimento de laboratorio evidencian fuertes interacciones de competencia intra- e interespecífica entre ellas, que suelen derivar en canibalismo y depredación respectivamente. Estas interacciones resultan ser asimétricas, de forma que la especie univoltina T. ballus sale perjudicada en su interacción con las otras dos especies, que son generalistas y migradoras. Por otra parte, se describen la red de interacciones entre estas especies y los parasitoides que las atacan, así como las relaciones mutualistas facultativas que de forma laxa mantienen con hormigas. Se describe, así mismo, el fenómeno de diapausa prolongada en T. ballus, que puede extenderse por más de seis años y que se interpreta como una estrategia para diversificar...

Butterflies are a major component of biodiversity and contribute to the flow of energy from primary producers to higher trophic levels. Many species of butterflies have a close relationship with the plants on which they depend to complete their life cycles, and therefore a high specificity in the use of habitats. Butterflies are very sensitive to human management through changes in vegetation and landscape structure, and therefore they may also be used as environmental bio-indicators of those changes. However, the knowledge of ecology and current distribution of many species of Iberian Rhopalocera is still insufficient. Environmental factors modulate the presence or absence and abundance of butterflies in different habitats. The species distribution models (SDM) allow for the analysis of the influence of many of these factors on the observed distributions of a species and their importance as components of their ecological niche. This knowledge, especially in the case of species with more restricted distribution areas, is of key importance to propose conservation policies and as a tool to predict effects of climate change. On the other hand, biotic factors are also crucial, but they are more elusive and difficult to investigate. In particular, the interactions between species sharing the same resources, that may be included in a guild. These interactions include mutualistic interactions with ants (Myrmecophily) or antagonistic ones (such as parasitism, predation and cannibalism), as well as adaptations to avoid unfavorable conditions for development (e. g. diapause). There are still significant knowledge gaps in this area. In the present thesis the antagonistic interactions that occur in a guild formed by three lycaenid species (Tomares ballus, Lampides boeticus and Leptotes pirithous) sharing the perennial legume Erophaca baetica as food plant in Sierra Morena are discussed. Our field observations demonstrate that these three species of Lycaenid butterflies overlap in space and time, laying eggs in the same patches and in the same stems, inflorescences and pod fruits of their food plant. Our laboratory experiment results illustrate strong interactions of intra- and interspecific competition among the studied species, which often lead to cannibalism and predation respectively. These interactions were highly asymmetrical, so that the univoltine specialist T. ballus results adversely affected in their interaction with the other two generalist, multivoltine and migratory species. We also describe the interactions between the different butterfly species and their parasitoids as well as the sporadic and facultative mutualistic relationship with ants. The prolonged diapause in T. ballus, which can be extended for more than six years, is interpreted as an evolutionary strategy to diversify the risk of a very high mortality that can occur in years of unfavorable conditions for this univoltine species, which is on the wing during a short period in late winter and early spring...
